Because the Line of Descent was to the eldest child of the previous King, George VI, but as he had no son it went to Elizabeth who became Queen Elizabeth II. If Prince Philip was then to become King he would be of higher rank than the Queen. I think the idea of male succession in the UK throne is now abolished it will go to the eldest child in future irrespective of sex.

The wife of the heir to the throne is not a queen. She doesn't become queen until he is crowned King. She can be called queen because she is not a successor to the throne. However if the husband of the Queen as monarch were called King then he would outrank the reigning monarch so he is given the title of Prince Consort.

The queens husband (Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh) is not considered King as it would make the Queen's status lower. She is the dominant ruler of the country, and referring to Prince Phillip as 'King' would make him the superior one... if that makes sense??

Hope i helped!!

Why is Queen Elizabeth's husband called Duke and not king?

The Queen of England is only known as "the Queen" if she is the rightful heir to the throne. If not, then she is known as the queen consort. When the Queen of England chooses to marry, she will traditionally be arranged a marriage with, or choose, a man of noble origins. The man will normally be a prince, the heir to another land. This forms friendly ties between the two nations.Once the two are legally married, the queen retains her title of "Queen of England", while the husband receives the title of "Prince Consort of England". This is because he still is the heir to the throne of his land, and therefore, remains a prince of that land. The title of "Prince Consort" is removed when the ruling head of the prince's land dies. As the heir, the prince then becomes the king of that land, and therefore, will have his title changed to "King Consort of England".Note that consort simply means the spouse of a ruling head of state.
