The parchment and ink of the Torah scroll would begin to swell up from constant human contact because of the oils in human fingers. As a result, Jews use a "yad", which is a metal finger-extension, to follow their position in the Torah scroll as they read (instead of using their finger). They follow the reading to ensure accuracy.
Yad Vashem is important to remember so it will never happen again. It also is in dedication to the six million Jewish people who perished.
