Napoleon Bonaparte's Egyptian expedition took place in 1798-1801. He wanted to protect French trading interests there. He also wanted to protect French access to the greater region such as Syria and on to India. On the expedition were scientists who wanted to study Egyptian antiquities. Academic, business/economic, cultural and political interests have always been strong motivators for establishing, and maintaining, a French presence in Egypt.

French is spoken in Egypt primarily due to historical reasons. France had a significant cultural and political influence in Egypt during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Many educational institutions in Egypt were founded by French speakers, and French continues to be taught in schools as a second language.
