A typical spot consists of a dark region called the umbra, surrounded by a lighter region known as the penumbra. The sunspots appear relatively dark because the surrounding surface of the Sun (the photosphere) is about 10,000 degrees F., while the umbra is about 6,300 degrees F. Sunspots are quite large as an average size is about the same size as the Earth.

A black spot on the sun is known as a sunspot and is a phenomenon that is temporary in nature. It occurs on the suns photosphere and is caused by magnetic activity so intense that it inhibits convection in that particular area.

Sun spots form in pairs when a loop of solar magnetic flux breaks through the photosphere. The flux lines push away the plasma of the photosphere, exposing the slightly cooler layer of the sun just below the photosphere making the spots look dark.

If the spots stay long enough, the flux loop connecting them will pick up plasma becoming a solar prominence. If there is enough energy in the flux lines they might "break" and eject the plasma they have picked up as a solar flare.

Visible dark spots on the sun are called?

We call them sunspots, but dark and cool are relative terms. A sunspot is dark only relative to the surrounding solar surface, but still intensely bright compared to your common household light bulb. It's cooler than the surrounding solar material, but still hot enough to vaporize a spaceship and anyone inside it in a fraction of a second.

What is a violent storm on the sun that has huge clouds of large bright loops or arches gases?

They''re called sun-spots. They appear as dark 'spots' on the surface of the Sun. The bright 'arches' are solar flares resulting from the storm's energy.

Why do spots appear dark?

Spots appear dark because they are much cooler than the surrounding area. They are still very hot, but not as much as the rest of the Photosphere.
