If emotions are not controlled, feelings will be released in no time of need. For instance, if you scream and cuss and murder the dude who said your fly was open, anger would bot have been properly controlled. If you were so happy in your life that you only saw rainbows and happiness and peace and unicorns in the world, people will think you are weird and happiness would ve inaffectively be controlled.

To invoke harmony among those around you. No one should have to be a victim to another person's rampant anger or impatience for example. It is the wise person who is in control of their emotions at all times by what they think about, not by what they feel. You can change your emotions just by the way you view them and the cause of what you are feeling. You are what you think. A person comes off looking like a fool who can't control their emotions. You may think you have won the battle but you have definitely lost the war.
