Why is there a prolonged cranking period when starting your Toyota corolla?

There shouldn't be a prolonged cranking time to start. Should be only two (2) or three (3) seconds at most. No year given, mileage, engine, history of car so that makes too much guess work to make an accurate diagnosis of why.
