It's not a square. It's the letter "D" indicating that the coin was minted in Denver.
Cents minted in Philadelphia don't have mint marks. Other coins minted in Philadelphia and dated 1980 or later have a P mint mark.

All small date coins have a blunt 1 in the date, large date coins have a pointed 1 and a much bigger 3
1 cent. From 1965 to 1967, no U.S. coins carried mint marks.
The 1984 Lincoln cent has no known small or large date varieties only 1982 and 1960 do.

Circulated 1960 small dates from the Denver mint are worth about $0.25.
This year has 2 types of Mint Sets, small date ($80.00) & large date ($20.00).The difference is the size of the date on the penny.
