The Ford Taurus is famous for having leaking heater core. It is located on the passenger side inside the passenger compartment and inside the dashboard. It costs about $1000 to get a mechanic to fix it.
Sounds like you have an internal heater box issue. Possibly one on the mode door motors quit or you have a broken door inside heater box. To access heater box, you have to remove entire dashboard assembly. This is not too simple of a task.
How is it running? Is the mileage ok? Have you checked the computer diagnostic codes? It's possible that the ignition isn't doing well and you're getting unburned hydrocarbons out the exhaust. It's possible that the oxygen sensor is bad and that the engine is getting too much fuel in an effort to compensate. It's possible that there is a problem with the EGR valve or even the catalytic converter.
Those are the classic symptoms for a heater matrix (core) leaking

The engine may backfire excessively. You may also smell a strong exhaust odor in the riding position. In worst cases, it can cause the engine to run lean.
There is a strong possibility that you have either a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head.
It might be coolant, oil burning or too rich of fuel air mixture
