Your Breathing rate is increased due to the fact that your muscles are working harder then when they are at rest. This means that they need oxygen, along with sugars to complete cellular respiration. Your heart rate increases so that it can move the oxygen to the target cell in the muscles you are using quicker.

There is an increase in pulse rate and breathing rate after vigorous exercise because, when exercising, the muscles are being used and they required oxygen rich blood and the heart needs to work harder to pump this oxygen rich blood around the body. There is an increase in the breathing rate because of the demand for more oxygen, therefore the bpm increases.

Similarities between breathing and your heart rate?

Your heart rate, or pulse, is the number of times your heart beats in a minute. Depending on your age and level of physical fitness, a normal resting pulse ranges from 60 to 80 beats per minute. Your breathing rate is measured in a similar manner, with an average resting rate of 12 to 20 breaths per minute. Both your pulse and breathing rate increase with exercise, maintaining a ratio of approximately 1 breath for every 4 heartbeats.
