I had a 1997 Lincoln Towncar with this problem. It probably had the same engine. The cause was anti-freeze leaking from the intake manifold. The manifold was made of a composite material of some sort and was quite pricey to buy new. Before I got an estimate for labor to install I donated the vehicle to the Salvation Army.
