In the first thousand years there was essentially one church. Then one of the bishops split off from the rest, and formed his own church. This was the church of Rome. After five hundred years there was a reaction within this church to abuses of power and the so called protestant churches formed. These spread throughout northern europe and were adopted by most northern european governments as national churches. The catholic church was dominant in south Western Europe Italy France Spain. The eastern church stayed true to its founding principles and spread north to Russia where it was adopted as the national church and east where in some places its message was re-interpreted. From western europe christians spread out as colonisation spread to the Americas and Africa and the far east. More and more regional and local denominations were formed out of the protestant churches, but catholics stayed true to their mother church in Rome, and the orthodox east was largely untouched by these changes.

In the nineteenth century there was a proliferation of churches being split and organised on different beliefs and behaviours which were added to the original biblical and historic systems. Some of these would not be recognised as churches and others retain part of Christianity but are diluted by the interpretations created by their founders.

There are now tens of thousands of different denominations worldwide.
