Usually any army in the world is based on the organisation of a Batallion and then the Batallion comprising of 3 or 4 companies. Maximum the number of companies may go upto 6. Beyond this it may become slightly cumbersome for the Batallion Commander to manage or command his companies.
Typically companies get named A, B, C, D etc and so on therefore the alphabet "J" lying 10th in the order of merit of Alphabets never gets to come out onto the scene.
This is not the best answer and many organizations go beyond four companies; please see the discussion to help formulate a better answer.

There was no "Q" Company in either army, nor of the Army of the United States today, simply because "Q" handwritten looks like "G," and can could lead to confusion in the fog and chaos of war. This is the same reason that "J" Company was omitted, in that lt looked like "I," and the letter J had only come into fairy recent usage by the time of the War for Independence. (1775-1782). The legend of it being too "ladylike" is simply that, a legend.
