Back in the day it made a lot of money, almost to the equivelant of gold.
Tobacco, Jamestown colony
When the Jamestown colony was built in Virginia, all the colonists were looking for was gold. When there was no gold found except for pyrite (fake gold), the colonists discovered the cash crop of tobacco. The trade of tobacco raised their profits so much that King James called tobacco the "golden leaf" meaning that the tobacco was there form of gold.
He experimented with tobacco plants, by crossbreeding tobacco from brazil, with a harsh strain of weeds that Native Americans had grown. Making the plants spread like wildfire. His experiment resulted in high quality tobacco. It was then called brown gold, because of it's popularity. The Virginia colony exported more than 1.5 million lbs of tobacco to England every year.
Brown Tobacco Warehouse was created in 1892.
