Because there aren't many opals left

Coober Pedy is in a dry, dusty, outback region of South Australia. There is little to attract people to the area except for the novelty of seeing the underground homes and touring through the opal mines. While the opals have not yet been mined out, it requires dedication and long-term commitment to find anything of value, and the average fossicker stands little chance of finding anything on the surface. Therefore, tourism has become the main drawcard to keep this little town going.
