Put a glass tube into the beaker of water so that it touches the bottom, then drop the crystal down the tube and put your finger over the top of the, then remove the tube gently, leaving the crystal behind in the beaker. distill it- boil it and have a tube that goes through cool water and into an empty beaker. look up distilling

If you place the thermometer so it touches the sides of the test tube, you are measuring the temperature of the test tube, not the substance in the test tube. So, in order to get an accurate reading of the substance, do not touch the sides of the test tube with the thermometer.
leave it in sunlight and water it, use a starch indicator to test presence of starch, or put an aquatic plant in a beaker of water and put a test tube upside down in the beaker surrounding the plant and leave it in sunlight and you should eventually see oxygen bubbles start to form up from the plant through the test tube
