Because of the use of fishing gillnets in the area they inhabit, which is in a small part of the northern Sea of Cortez. The little vaquita gets caught in the nets and drowns. Fortunately, the Mexican government is committed to saving the vaquita and is involved in a fisherman buy-out program. And the International Whaling Commission recently declared that gillnets must be banned in the area they inhabit.

There are currently only 250 vaquita left, and yes, they can be saved.
