When someone loses their heart an empty shell is left behind. This shell or vessel then become a nobody, a being that has no heart, thus no true emotions, and is not meant to actually exist. Roxas is Sora's nobody because Sora loses his heart in the first game when he stabs himself with Riku's keyblade to release Kairi's heart. Of course the audience doesn't find out about the existence of Nobodies until Kingdom Hearts 2. In Kingdom hearts 2 when Sora is about to wake up, Diz and Riku get Roxas to reunite with his heart which is Sora. And that's what happens to him. At least that is until you play Birth by Sleep and find out that there is more to Roxas than meets the eye. But that will include me giving out spoilers.
