Softwood (generally Pine or one of it's cousins) is cheaper partly because there is more of it. But I'd say that because it is faster growing (measured in "board-feet/year), it's more likely to be grown as a crop.
But there's a down side to this speed. The wood is not as dense, has a coarse grain, and generally has more turpintines in it. It's great for building houses and such, because it doesn't weigh as much. But it's usually not considered to be as nice to use for making things where the wood will be exposed after finishing.
