Xylitol (hydrogenated xylose) is common in Chewing Gum as a sweetening agent. Actually, it is used as a sweetener in many oral hygienic products (ex. mouthwash, toothpaste). It seems that the bacteria that grow in your mouth can not properly digest it.

Actually we can't properly metabolize it either. It was one of the first sweeteners found that diabetics could use with increasing their insulin levels.

Added to the fact that it has little aftertaste and currently there are no known health warnings, you can see why xylitol is so popular in gum.
