The thermostat may be sticking, the radiator might be clogged, the water pump could be shot, or it could simply be low on coolant. Without further information about the problem, i.e. how frequently it overheats, the conditions under which the overheating happens, I can't give you a definitive answer.

If I am understanding the part you are talking about the. It is the metal line that goes into the slave cylinder that attaches to the rubber hose from the slave cylinder... Depending on your slave cylinder it is/was held in by a plastic horseshoe style clip that could have broke from a stress fracture manufacturer defect or overheating
Well yes and no. Both have a 2.2 four cylinder if I'm not mistaken, but I don't think the earlier Cavalier's have the EcoTec motor. And you should be able to get the engine from the '03 into the '97 with no problem.
