First, check Transmission Fluid levels, but typically once you loose a full gear, if the fluids topped off, your looking at a transmission rebuild.

A 96 Chevy Beretta Z26 has a 3100 V6 engine. The oil drain is located on the bottom of the oil pan, on a slight angle pointing down and towards the rear.
try having the shift solenoids checked, it seems to be a big problem with the Chevy trucks. my truck is not shifting properly 1996 Chevy 1500 v-6 vortec 4.3 L with automatic O/D . Solenoids are in the pan on the bottom of the transmission. Good luck.
