Could be due to many things like a blockage in the radiator or cooling circuit or more seriously a blown head gasket or cracked head. In these instances the water-glycol mix seeps into the engine and evaporates (due to high temperatures). The head itself can crack due to a number of reasons. Firstly, it is an after effect of a blown head gasket. Second, Nissan diesels have to work hard due to a poor power to weight ratio (they have a sedan engine), this puts additional stress on the engine as it has to work harder to keep the same speed (especially when carrying 7 people). Thirdly, these models (as well as some of the Toyota estimas etc) had manufacturing defects in design and quality of the head and head gasket, for example, some mechanics report that the head was incorrectly torqued down during manufacture. Best chance you have of avoiding this problem is, replace and flush out the cooling system, and don't drive abusively (many people have problems with these types of engines around the 160000km mark. People just put their foot down and rev the hell out of engines like this and sooner or later they're going to give up. Far better to accelerate slowly - once these people movers get up to speed they are actually not bad power wise, they just struggle to get up to that speed as fast as an average sedan due to the brick-like aerodynamics and poor power to weight ratio.

A Nissan Frontier may be overheating because the radiator is cracked. A thermostat failure can also cause it to overheat.
