Why is your dog blue?

There are two ways I can think of that a dog can be "blue" - blue coat color or blue coloring of the mucus membranes.

If your dog has a blue coloration to the gums and tongue, he is running out of oxygen in his blood and needs immediate medical attention to prevent death.

In the other case, there are certain breeds of dog that have a "blue roan" or "blue merle" coloring, which is achieved through genes that blend black, gray and white hairs in a pattern that gives the overall impression of a dusky, muted blue. This is normal for some dogs.
