Why would a female dog suddenly want to hurt another female dog in the family?

Have you checked that she is in heat or that she is pregnent?

She started to come into heat but it only lasted a couple of days. there was very little blood. she is either in the house or in a fenced yard.

Females may be attacking other females out of dominance. When another dog is introduced there should be a period where they have constant supervision. This is to prevent fights. Also, one female may just not be very welcoming of others in her "territory", otherwise know as your house. or if your female dog has puppies she will attack other dogs to protect them.

The dog could be jealous. It depends on what's going on when the dog attacks the wife. For example, if the husband is sitting on the couch with the dog and the wife goes over to get the dog to put it outside, the dog

may view her actions as aggressive or feel she is trying to take it away from a warm, cosy environment. Also, the dog may feel the wife is a threat to its' affection with the husband.
