First of all you do not WORM your horse-- that would mean giving it worms- what you do is called DE-WORMING. The trick to proper de-worming technique is to get the paste as far back in the horse's mouth and tongue as possible so the it doesn't have to taste it. If you have ever tasted any of the pastes-- nothing went into making them taste good (nearly all the active ingredients in today's de-wormers can be found in pill form for use in human medicine). Just imagine your mother shoving a huge spoonful of the one food you hate the most in your mouth once every 6 to 10 weeks because it is good for you and she loves you-- Your horse thinks of you as part of his 'herd' and you just did this really yucky thing to him-- and that taste lingers- so he doesn't forget it 5 minutes later. Do your horse the favor or getting that tube WAY back in his mouth before pushing that plunger.

One way is to take a dry wash cloth and pull his tongue out and to the side like the vet does when starting to float his teeth. You can then get your hand and tube by the back molars and give the plunger the squirt. When you let go of his tongue the paste should slide down the back of his throat and not hit his taste buds. it is best for your horse if you do this sort of stuff from his RIGHT side so that he doesn't associate this stuff with every day bridling and other care. I do all my horses shots and de-worming on their right side and have no problems. Clients are amazed at how quick and easy I can de-worm their horses going from the off side approach.
