Is rain water acidic?

All rain water is slightly acidic.

Why is rainwater getting less acidic?

Rainwater is not actually getting less acidic. it is actually getting more acidic! the more greenhouse gases we use (e.g: carbon dioxide) the more acidic our rain gets! This occurs because the more fossil fuels and greenhouse gases get thrown carelessly into the oceans, lakes and rivers; the more acidic they get. This means that when the water evaporates into the air, it is more acidic then it's usual neutral (7 on the pH scale). This is also affecting global warming and killing the sea animals by taking all the oxygen from the water and replacing it with harmful substances.

What is the pH difference between acid rain and pure water?

Pure water has a pH of 7.0, while acid rain has a pH or 5.0 or less. The difference in pH would be 2.0 or greater, depending on how acidic the acid rain is.

How do you determine if rain is acidic?

Most atmospheric chemists (such as is my specialty) agree that Acid Rain has a pH less than 5. You would think water should be a neutral 7 pH, but carbon dioxide in the air dissolves into it and lowers the pH slightly. In addition, there are other small sources of dissolved acids. Anything less than 5 is acidic, and so you can determine if rain is acidic with a simple litmus paper test.

How does acid rain cause chemical weathering?

The acid rains are due to acidic gases within the the atmosphere. Gases like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides get dissolved in the rain water, making the water very acidic. They lower the PH of the water below 3 from time to time. This sort of strong acidic water when falls on buildings/rocks, it tends to eat away their surface. So in this manner acidic rain cause weathering.

Are acid rain and normal rain both acidic?

Acid rain is more acidic than normal rain. This is immediately obvious from the term.Acid rain is neither gaseous or radioactive. It simply has a lower pH.

How can the water cycle make acidic water go everywhere?

The pollutants in air make rain water acidic. Rain water, containing acid reaches everywhere .

Is rainwater acidic neutral or basic in california?

Rain water is generally acidic

Why rain is naturally acidic?

The hydrologic cycle involves a process of natural water distillation; essentially, rain water is distilled water, and distilled water is naturally acidic usually with a pH slightly less than 7 since it absorbs carbon dioxide which reacts slowly with water to give the bicarbonate and hydronium ions.

Why is rain sometimes acidic?

Pollution evaporates with the water, and comes down as acid rain.
