Probably because it is gasping for oxygen. You need to do a water change pronto. Failure to act could easily kill the fish.

What is a good substitute for koi fish if you don't have a huge tank?

If you look around pet stores, they should have some Goldfish. There are Fantails and Shubunkin Goldfish. I got Shubunkin. But be careful if you put it in with Danios because I got mine yesterday and if the Danios are hungry thet might pick on the Shubunkin.

Why is my betta fish continuously gulping air and staying at the top of the bowl after I change the water?

When you first change the water in your aquarium , there is lots and lots of waste flowing around in the water from the gravel in the bottom of the tank. it seems that your beta is just getting oxygen from the top of the water. hope this helps

Is the shubunkin ill the fish keeps swimming down to the bottom of the tank and as he reaches the bottom he flips onto his side and skims across the gravel only for a split second.is he ill?

Yes, you´re Shubunkin is sick and will most likely soon be dead. Sorry to tell you , but this is just the way it is. If you´ve other fish in the tank then it´s best to remove this sick fish a.s.a.p. and bring it to a separate tank. Check the tank for rotting plants, not eaten food, etc. Remove all of these as best as you can. Check the filter and air pump. If possible test the water in the tank for ammonia & nitrate. If you don´t want to test or can´t test the water, just gently replace half of the water with clean water of the same temperature and repeat this after one week. In theory you can give the sick Shubunkin medicine, in in practice this is not very useful. If you insist then you can treat the sick fish in the separate tank. Never use medicine in the main tank, if you´ve also other fish in it. If your Shubunkin is finally dead, give it a proper funeral: bury it in your garden and put flowers on top. If you do this the spirit of the fish will give you good luck to continue your aquarium hobby.

If water contracted on freezing what implications might this have for aquatic life?

If water contracted on freezing, it would have catastrophic implications for aquatic life. Instead of the ice staying on top at the surface of the water, it would sink if it contracted. This would kill aquatic life.
