Why isn't smoking illegal if it is killing many people every year?

A combination of personal freedom and tobacco lobbying is what prevents a complete ban on tobacco products. Some believe the government is "greedy" and wants more tax dollars from the industry when in fact, most if not all the money generated by tobacco taxes are used to counterbalance the strains of tobacco usage on the health care system.
Tobacco has been a part of this nation since the first colony grew it and sold it to stay alive. The tobacco companies have a great deal of power and are just no longer producing just tobacco but own companies. They also give to political campagins to make sure that no law is passed by Congress. Some in Congress also are tobacco growers.
The same things apply in the UK though taxes gathered far exceed any cost to the National Health Service. In addition there are many jobs involved. The same is true of alcohol.
