Best Answer

The 8085 microprocessor was an enhanced version of the 8080, primarily running on a single +5V power supply, hence the designation 8085.

The 8086 microprocessor was an enhanced version of the 8085, primarily running as a 16 bit processor, hence the designation 8086.

The 8088 microprocessor (part of the 8086/8088 family) was a version of the 8086 that run on an 8 bit bus, hence the designation 8088.

Why 8080 processor called so?

Intel, who developed the 8080, developed families of chips. The ancestor family of the 8080 was the 4004; part of the 4-bit MCS-4 family of chips - the 4001 being the ROM, 4002 RAM and so on and the 4004 being the CPU. The 8 bit version of the chip was named, naturally enough, 8008. The 8008 had a number of limitations; principally it's memory management was complicated and limited, these limitations were addressed in a new version which was named the 8080.

It was the first Intel 8 bit processor to which followed the 8086, then the 80186, 80286, etc all of which were code compatible and are often referred to simply as x86 family processors.

What is a cache outside the processor called?

L2 cache. Today's processors all have some memory on the processor chip (called a die). Memory on the processor die is called Level 1 cache (L1 cache). Memory in the processor package, but not on the processor die, is called Level 2 cache (L2 cache). Some processors use a third cache farther from the processor core, but still in the processor package, which is called Level 3 cache (L3 cache).
