Acids if discharged into the water bodies directly, without neutralising, will lower the pH and harm the ecosystem. If the concentration and the quantity of the untreated stream are sufficiently high, there may be irreversible damage to the ecosystem (plants, animals including fish may die). Neutralising (with alkaline/basic compounds) produces salts (generally harmless; not necessarily NaCl) and water as byproduct, in most cases.
