It was important for the Iroquois to work together because the colonists had more advanced technology (i.e. guns, rifles, canons, etc.) and had more people.
The colonists had more people in terms of how they would attack Native Americans because normally, tribes didn't know much about the settlers so they wouldn't know/ wouldn't want to (anyway) form an alliance against them.
The Iroquois needed more people in terms of the technological advancements of the colonists. Since the colonists had guns and canons and such, the Iroquois wanted to counter the technology with more people.
(Basically the Iroquois way of thinking is 'they have guns, we have people. If we have more people then we can overpower them even though they have guns.'

The Iroquois Confederacy first began when five different Native American nations, the Cayuga, the Onondaga, the Mohawk, the Seneca, and the Oneida came together against their common enemies, to strengthen their tribes. Each tribe had its representative. If a tribe had a conflict, the Iroquois Confederacy representatives came together and discussed it until they could reach a compromise. Usually these compromises worked. The Iroquois Confederacy was a form of government among the more Southern Eastern Woodlands Tribes.
