Most of the people around Jesus were Jews. Their law stated that revenge was right and it was the law to do to others what they did to you and not what you would want them to do to you OLD TESTEMENT Exodus 21:23-25 But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. Leviticus 19:18 Love your NEIGHBOUR as yourself: I am the LORD. Jesus said that anyone can love those who love them, but he calls us to love everyone including the down and outs, the rejects, the criminals, the hurting and those that hurt. NEW TESTEMENT Luke 6:29 To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. Mattthew 5:44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you Luke 6:31 And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
