Best Answer

Language is said to be abitrary because of the following reasons;

1. Human being is born without language, so man found words/language to communicate abitrary

2. There is no one to one correspondence between word and its object,,eg a cow and the animal itself

3. Even the invetion of words is abitrary, words are choosing randomly in order to be used.

Language is considered arbitrary because there is no inherent connection between the sounds or symbols used in a language and the meanings they represent. This means that different languages can use completely different sounds or symbols to represent the same concepts or ideas. The relationship between a word and its meaning is determined by convention and cultural agreement.

How many different languages are there?

There are about 6900 known languages worldwide. For more information, see the link below. Keep in mind many of these are variations of one another and some are only spoken by a handful of people. There's a problem with this, though. The distinction between a language and a dialect is abitrary. There are no scientific criteria, and the decision whether to call a variety of language a dialect or something more impressive is socio-political, not linguistic. The number of languages will change depending on your criteria for a language. For example, french is spoken in Canada and France, but a frenchman and french Canadian will have great trouble communicating because they speak very different versions of French. Every minute the number of languages change because either speakers of one uncommon language die, or a child who will learn to use language in a different way than his/her parents is born.
