Why leaf spring is referred instead of helical spring in automobile?

Leaf springs only allow motion up and down. An axle can be positioned with two leaf springs and won't move left-right or forward and back. A spiral spring requires another device to stabilize it, torque bars, A frames mounted to K bars, or struts, because the spring alone will allow motion in all directions.
