No - use a Lambert conformal or better yet use a polar gnomonic chart . mercator charts are not good for higher latitudes , typically above 70' .

You would use Radars and stuff like techinal computers. Like we use today. Or like phono graphs (I think) and maybe satelitte providers. I gues that is all you need. There might be more stuff to look up for the polar region. Just go to google.com and type in polar region.
