Athena might want to fool Hector so that Achilles can strike and she wants the Greek's to win the war. She does this by pretending to be Hector's brother which gives Achilles time to strike.
Athena tricked Hector by turning into his favorite brother, Deiphobos. As Deiphobos, Athena told Hector to stand and fight Achilles since "he" would be by Hector's side. Therefore, with the additional courage gained by knowing his brother was at his side, Hector decided to stand against Achilles instead of going back into Troy.
Both Achilles and Hector understand the role the gods play in their lives and accept their fates as warriors. Hector knows that he will fall to Achilles and though he does not want to widow his wife, he understands that it is his fate.
Hector had killed Achilles' friend Patroclus.
