Countries make alliances as giant safety nets. Just in case someone decides to wage war, they know that anohter country has their back...so to speak. In the case of war, a country wants support, so they sign various agreements to say..

"yeah Russia i will help you out if anyone pisses you off."

"thanks Britain, and i will make sure to also help you if anything happens...we cool?"

"oh yeah!"
