Gargling is just a method to get medicine or saline (salt water) deep into your sore throat without drowning or swallowing the solutions.
What reduces the pain is the solution used in the gargle. Usually this is a saline solution because saline is very soothing to mucous tissues and helps inflammation. See the related question below for more tips on how to get rid of a sore throat.

Gargling with aspirin will stop a cold coming on if you get it in time and it will greatly ease the pain of the throat
Yes. It helps take down the swelling and can also help your throat feel better. You can also try swishing and gargling peroxide in your mouth. IT helps dull the pain.
The doctor at the E.R. can give you a liquid to drink that will numb your throat for 8 hours. If the pill is not working thry gargling with warm salt water and maybe they will give you the liquid.
In my experience, the best over the counter medicine for sore throat pain is ibuprofen (advil, motrin) or acetaminophen (tylenol) taken as directed on the bottle. Sore throat pain is like any other pain you may experience, and will respond to pain medication. In addition, gargling with warm salt water several times a day (3-4) provides relief and will help you heal faster. If your sore throat is due to Allergies or post nasal drip, you might also try benadryl (diphenhydramine) to help dry that up. Sore throat drops/candies and sprays are numbing agents. They tend to numb the tongue rather than the back of the throat. If you are set on one of these products, the spray will probably work better if you can get the spray back to the throat.
Both can be used to treat the symptomatic pain, howeverthey are for pain alone and will not solve whatever is causingthe sore throat. One reason for asore throat is that post-nasal drip or the drainage of mucus down your throat, which is best taken care of by gargling with warm salt water. If your lymph nodes feel inflamed odds are you're fighting an infection and should treat it with acetaminophen, warm tea, and a liquid diet to stay hydrated.
Coming down with strep throat isn’t usually the first item on anybody’s wish list, and if you’ve had it, then you know exactly how painful it can really be. Searching for ways to eliminate strep throat pain is difficult, and you may find that many of the ways people suggest don’t actually work. With that said, you’re probably ready for some suggestions that will knock the strep throat pain right out of the park. Follow these simple steps, and you should be well on your way to relieving yourself of the pain. The first thing you should do in your quest to eliminating the strep throat pain is purchase Chloraseptic. It’s a spray bottle that is used to spray numbing solution to the back of the throat. The pain treatment is almost instant as it begins to work as soon as it touches the tonsils. A few applications of Chloraseptic should majorly begin to numb the pain and help you get back to a normal routine. However, Chloraseptic isn’t a cure for strep throat so it shouldn’t be used continuously in hopes to treat the strep throat. A doctor should be consulted anyway to see about a proper treatment. However, you’re probably going to need another form of pain relief just to help with the Chloraseptic. Another proven technique that you can use is the gargling of salt water. It has been said to ease the pain caused by strep throat quickly and efficiently. In the case that you don’t have these things that were previously mentioned, you might also want to try sticking to very cold liquids and foods. The cold temperature will help to soothe and sometimes numb the pain in the back of the throat. Ice cold water will definitely help, but soda or other carbonated drinks are not recommended. The acid may irritate the tonsils and potentially worsen the pain. Ice cream is also a popular choice of cold food for strep throat. Cough drops have also been known to work wonders for strep throat pain. They’re like candy too, so consuming as many as you’d like really has no adverse effect. Keeping one in at all times can help soothe the throat and also help to restrain the urge to cough.
you might have a sour throat and might cough frequently and can cause head aches
