A great many young women died in childbirth during that time period. Not getting married saved women from having to go through the dangers of giving birth and, therefore, allowed them to live much longer.

It was one of the few places where women were more or less independent and were allowed to liver their life without the oversight of a man. Women were considered second class citizens, couldn't own property, and were treated as chattel. Women of wealthy families were usually contracted to marry early in life and used as a means for the family to gain power or wealth. Often, for these women, the life in a nunnery would be much preferred compared to a loveless marriage.
