The FAA has determined the radio signals used by mobile devices (such as smart phones, iPads, pagers and similar devices) can interfere with the navigation and communication systems' radio signals. Particularly during take off and landing, when the pilots need to have every available bit of information, disruption to the navigation or communication systems could result in a fatal crash.
