Vegetarianism is said to be less wasteful, less polluting, in that meat production envolves a great deal of vegetation/grain to produce a pound of meat, also there is the fact that animals such as cattle produce great quantities of methane a greenhouse gas through flatulence and through fermentation of their waste. It is said that much more of the worlds population could be fed were we all to be vegetarians.
