Electrical isn't your strong point, is it.

If you take the neg. cable off the battery then you will not measure any voltage between the neg. cable and the pos battery because there is no complete circuit back to the neg side of the battery.

I would start by making sure that the battery connections are clean and secure, as well as the main connection at the alternator. Check that there is no corrosion on any of the terminals. Use some sandpaper if you need to clean them up, on the terminals and the cable connectors.

Can you drive a car when the alternator is broken?

I drove mine today, it was fine while the battery had over 9 or 10 volts, but once the battery died, the car (4WD, mitsu challenger) started driving poorly, and then stopped when I pulled over. Not sure if I did any damage yet. If it is a SI (Spark ignition) engine then you can drive so long as the battery has sufficient charge. A CI (Compression ignition) engine does not rely on an electrical ignition and will drive without the alternator or battery.

What would drain the battery on 2002 ford ranger?

if the battery is not bad and fully charged, remove the positive cable. Touch it to the positive post slowly. If if sparks, you have a load on it. remove the fuses one at a time and try the cable on the post each time until you get no spark. The fuse you've pulled has the load on it. Trace the citcuit until you find what it is. example, the ign fuse. It may be the alternator is staying hot.

What is needed to push the electrons from the cathode to anode?

Actually the electrons are pulled not pushed. The anode attracts them with its positive charge.

A negatively charged object is placed within a positive electric field. what happens to the object?

Electric Field between positive and negative charges. If the Electric Field in which both the positive and negative charges are present is stronger than the Electric Field between the two charges we are talking about, the the negative charge will move away from the positive charge in that positive direction of the field. If not, then the negative charge will get attracted to the positive charge and stay at the position of the positive charge. It will be pulled toward the source of the electric field. (Novanet)

What causes the car battery to run down after vehicle driven?

most likely its the alternator that isn't recharging. you can have that alternator pulled off and checked at any local parts store like automotive advantage. that's the most common problem. if that doesn't work check your terminals on the battery and make sure they're clean and check battery grounds

How do you get into the Ford Escape if the battery is dead?

Charge by connecting positive clip of charger set to low amperage to avoid blowing fuse in circuit to the large positive wire that is on the alternator under round rubber bubble cover that can easily be pulled off. Getting to this is possible for a person very experienced with mechanical works on car even without lifting the vehichle, but may be a challenge for a less experienced person as you have to work by feel unless you lift the vehichle to get better view. Good luck. :)

What could be draining the battery on a 1970 firebird?

It could be lights on in the trunk or a short someplace, your best bet would be to touch positive cable to the battery and if you get a spark something is drawing power from the battery, pull one fuse at a time and recheck the spark at the battery and when you have a fuse pulled and it finally doesn't spark when you touch the positive cable to the battery terminal you have found the circuit that your problem is in.

Was driving 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD when the battery charge suddenly spiked up pulled over then the charge went down to normal Then drove again and charge spiked again What may have caused this?

Alternators gone bad.

Cost to repair a 1989 toyo Camry le 4 cylinder alternator?

I'm not sure how many billable hours they charge for this but here's a ball park estimate.$125 for alternator (Autozone) they'll charge you a few bucks on top of that. Maybe $3-400 total depending on mechanic. They will also recommend you change your belts too. While the alternator is pulled they must remove your belts (Serpentine or Power steering or both). Have them change them if they are worn, thus you wont have to change them for a while. Don't let them charge any extra labor for that as they will have to take the belts off to replace the alternator!!!!

What is wrong if the battery light is on in a 1999 Ford Expedition and it has 11.5 volts at battery and you replaced the alternator and it dies if the battery cable is pulled while running?

Check out the battery cables. Make sure that they are connected good and not corroded or damaged. Also check the connections at the alternator. I had a 97 Expedition with a battery indicator, 12.4 volts at the battery with the engine off and 11.6v with the engine running. Replaced the alternator and then had 11.9 v with the engine running. Checked the alternator fuses on the firewall and found the 175a alternator output fuse blown. Replaced the fuse and voltage then read 14.3 with the engine running. Not sure if the fuse was blown before the alternator was replaced or not as I never thought a 175a fuse could blow without fireworks. 2 cents: Fuse..... Also check for defective replacement alternator, alternator rebuilt with incorrect regulator, damaged instrument panel cluster, or damaged or poorly connected wiring. Rocky_B Sounds like a dead battery cell. 1) Engine OFF - A servicable battery will show 12.5 volts at the terminals, anything less and you have dead or dying cells - Replace the battery. 2) Engine RUNNING - A good alternator should put out 14volts or more. 13-14volts=weak alternator, If voltage at the terminals is the same or lower after starting, your alternator might not be putting out anything or you have bad diode pairs in the voltage regulator. With most newer models the voltage regulator is attached to the alternator, so you replace both. If the voltage regulator is not attached to the alternator, you still want to replace both as voltage regulators tend to become mated to the old alternator's output over time. replacing just the alternator could cause the voltage regulator to fail.

Why does your battery light come on after you start driving on the Interstate?

About 18 months ago I had replaced the alternator and battery; I bought the replacements at Auto-Zone and installed it myself. When it comes to my transportaion I always buy the best parts they have. The alternator was growling and the battery got so weak it wouldn't start the van anymore. I don't think the two problems were related at that time. About 3 months ago I was driving down the Interstate when my battery light came on. I pulled into a parking lot and turned off the van. When I started the van the light was off. When I got back on the Interstate the battery light came back on. I went to Auto-Zone; they checked the battery and said it was bad. They replaced the battery under the warranty, no charge. I drove three blocks and the battery light came on. I went home and pulled the alternator off and took it to Auto-Zone; they tested it and said it was bad so they replaced it under the warranty at no charge. I drove the van for about 2 months and the battery light came back on, now what? I turned the van off and then turned it back on; the battery light was off. I went to Auto-Zone and asked them about this and the guy says, is the light on now? Well no, it only comes on when I'm on the Interstate and not all the time. He said they couldn't test it until the light comes back on. When the light come on bring it to us so we can test it. Sure I'll do that. I leave, what am I an idiot, like I'm going to drive it back to Auto-Zone with the battery light on. I'd be lucky not to get stranded somewhere. *PUNCH LINE, SO, I then called the dealership and to make sure they have a "new" alternator not a rebuilt one even if it comes with a lifetime warranty. I replaced the alternator with the new one; it has a 1 year warranty and cost about $100 more than the Auto-Zone alternator but guess what? The battery light hasn't come on for the past 3 weeks. I took the alternator back and got my $200. I should note that since I had to loosen the serpentine belt every time I went ahead and replaced it at the same time. Also, it was only 18 months old from the same place.

What drains the battery on an 86 Ford Escort?

There is an easy way to find out what is draining the battery on your car. Disconnect the positive or negative battery terminal. Not both. Connect a test light between the post of the battery to the cable end of the battery. If your car is draining the batt ery the light will show it. To find out where the drain is coming from just pull fuses until the light goes out. Then you will know what is draining the battery by the function of the fuse you just pulled. For example, if you pulled the fuse for "radio" and the light went out you would know the radio is drawing the current off your battery.
