An over the air television through an antenna is what people used to use back in the golden age of television, before there was anything like a coaxial cable, and when there were three or four channels at the most. OTA channels still very much exist and with the OTA update that was made when it became clear that HD was here to stay, you can now get HDTV antennas and watch those major channels with a crystal clear picture, without befooing tied down to a cable provider.

VCRs do not support HDTV. You will not be able to record HD. You will be able to record a converted HD signal but will lose the quality.
Give it a good signal, using good cables. Doesn't matter whether or not you've a signal from an antenna, cable box or satellite dish or DVD. If it's an HDTV, of course, providing a HDTV signal is even better.
Yes, antenna signal boosters to tend to improve the signal a little bit. They are not too popular today and run for maybe around ten dollars.

This indicates there is no signal on the input you are looking at. The TV set has numerous inputs, be sure there is a cable and signal on the input you have selected.
Hi, Most of the newer TV's will automatically recognize a HDTV signal and make the correction internally. Chances are that if the HDTV isn't activating, then you don't have a HDTV signal available. Without seeing how you have it connected or knowing what type of signal source you're using, it's difficult to be able to offer much more assistance. Hope this helps, Cubby

Tivo's are compatible with HDTV with many combinations of hardware and performance. # Tivo's HDseries3 records and plays back HDTV signals for best HDTV experience. You need the HD signal from satellite, cable, or (antenna) channels. The series3 has the HDTV format NTSC tuner and is reverse compatible with the old analog ATSC tuner capabilities. # The FCC mandated that all DVDR'S manufactured after March 2007 be HDTV compatible. TIVO ended series2 production and responded with the series3. # Tivo series2 records and plays back the standard analog ATSC signal for non-HDTV viewing. Your HDTV must have an analog input capability or analog tuner to view the lower quality analog signal. You need the analog signal from your satellite, cable, or local broadcast (antenna) channels. Series2 devices only have the ATSC tuner. # Satellite and cable providers will promote the new HDTV format but will continue to provide the lower quality analog signals in their packages. You need want the HDTV package view HD quality programs. A series2 Tivo will only store and replay the lower quality analog signals. # Feb 2009 the analog signal channels will no longer be locally broadcast by antenna. The FCC is administering a program to provide each household a converter to modifying the HDTV signal to the lesser quality analog channels. You will need this converter to continue using the Tivo series2 with antenna supplied signals. The question then becomes, WILL TIVO SUPPORT THE SERIES 2 DEVICES WITH PROGRAM GUIDE INFORMATION?
