The wheelhouse is the enclosure on or near the bridge, or in communication with the bridge where the ship's steering wheel is housed. You're probably referring to some of the newer steering compartments where they use a small lever as the helm.
Due to hydraulics, it doesn't matter whether it's a traditional wheel or a joystick; it still accomplishes the same thing; ie. to steer the ship.
