Slavery was an abominable anachonism. It had been outlawed in Europe years ago. It is an obvious violation of human rights and world opinion was against it. It was dangerous to America because it broke up the nation and had to either lead to Civil War , be ended, or split the country into two countries. The nation could not exist for long half-slave and half-free. It might become all-slave and that was no longer possible. There was too much strong anti-slavery feeling in the North. Fugitive slave laws could not be enforced. Then there was the problem of what to do with new states.
