People have always been cruel. Murder, kidnap and torture have ALWAYS existed everywhere across the world.
The difference now is that TV and internet allow us to INSTANTLY see acts of cruelty EVERYWHERE in the world that they happen. This was not so in the past.

If there are people that are popular because they are mean or cruel, you don't want that kind of popularity. Becoming a bad person in order to be more popular is never going to be worth it.
