Because the sole purpose of a gun is to kill, and people have no need to kill other people. "The sole purpose of a gun is to kill" is an incorrect statement. That is one of the uses, but not the only use. However, historically, it was understood that it was acceptable and necessary to kill when acting in self defense. Only recently (relatively speaking) have the liberal sheep started to whine that you should never kill a person for any reason. To keep another person from intentionally killing you or a family member is a reason to kill another person. Rational people don't WANT to kill another person, but sometimes it's the only way to stay alive. And on another note, people that believe that banning guns will stop crime are demented. Violent crime existed thousands of years before guns existed, since recorded history, and, even today, a large percentage of violent crime is committed with no gun, or with a weapon other than a gun.

They provide protection against robberies, home invasions, terrorist attacks and mass shootings. The gun ban will not prevent criminals from acquiring guns and committing crimes.
