On pirate flags every symbol has a different meaning. Skulls or skeletons were commonly used and represented death. Hour glasses were also fairly common and meant your "time was short." Not all pirates used skulls however. The english pirate Thomas Thew flew a flag with an arm holding a sword, rumoured to mean "we are ready to kill you."

∙ 10y agoThe original meaning is lost, but most meant in the beginning that there was a disease on the ship. Eventually it was translated as the ship would give no quarter to enemies, and the skull and crossbones was meant as a warning.
