Why red blood cell looks darker at the edges than in the middle?

Red blood cells have what is known as a bi-concave or a 'doughnut' shape in order to increase their surface area.
As a result, they can take up more oxygen. The capacity of red blood cells to take up oxygen is increased further by lacking a nucleus, hence the reason why RBCs are made in the bone marrow.
