During idling the pressure in the inlet manifold is 20-25% of the atmospheric pressure.At suction stroke,the inlet valve opens and the product of combustion in the clearance volume expands in the inlet manifold,as the piston moves down to BDC,the gases along with fresh charge go into the cylinder.So to counteract the tendency of dilution and to get a ignitable mixture ,rich mixture is neccessary.
